Hosea M. Nelson - Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

Profile

Prof. Nelson earned a B.S. in Chemistry from University of California at Berkeley in 2005 and a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 2013. After postdoctoral training at University of California at Berkeley, Prof. Nelson joined the UCLA faculty in 2015. In 2021 he joined Caltech's Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Prof. Nelson's research program is focused on the development of enabling technologies for chemical synthesis. His group focuses on this goal through two primary avenues of research. 1) In their structural chemistry subgroup they develop new electron microscopy techniques that enable the characterization of complex molecules, often unattainable using traditional methods. 2) Their synthetic subgroup focuses on the development of new chemical reactions that will enable the efficient and rapid synthesis of bioactive compounds.

Ch 41 abc. Organic Chemistry. 9 units (4-0-5); first, second, third terms, 2022-23. Prerequisites: Ch 1 ab or instructor's permission. The synthesis, structure, and reaction mechanisms of organic compounds.

Ch 5 ab. Advanced Techniques of Synthesis and Analysis. a 12 units (1-9-2); b 12 units (1-9-2); first, second terms, 2022-23. Prerequisites: Ch 4 ab. Ch 102 strongly recommended for Ch 5 b. Modern synthetic chemistry. Specific experiments may change from year to year. Ch 5 a focuses on experiments illustrating the multistep syntheses of natural products. Ch 5 b focuses on the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of coordination and organometallic complexes and their applications in organic and electrochemical catalysis. Methodology will include advanced techniques of synthesis and instrumental characterization. Terms may be taken independently.
