Catalytic Asymmetric Molecular Rearrangements

Our group is interested in discovering new catalytic asymmetric rearrangements, which are synthetically powerful chemical transformations for the assembly of complex molecules. We have developed a series of enantioselective [2,3]-rearrangements, including an allylic amination of unactivated olefins via a [2,3]-rearrangement and a Meisenheimer rearrangement of allylic amine N-oxides. Our efforts in this area have provided new insight into the mechanisms of catalytic [2,3]- rearrangements. We are guided by the mechanistic hypothesis that reactive zwitterionic intermediates can be subjected to catalytic stereoselective rearrangements, despite their propensity to undergo facile thermal sigmatropic rearrangements.
