Lithium air and lithium-water batteries
Lutgard C De Jonghe,
PolyPlus Battery Company invented and patented protected lithium electrodes or PLEs. For the first time, these electrodes enable the practical development of lithium-air and lithium-water and lithium-sulfur batteries with unprecedented energy densities. The state of development and the challenges for each of these battery chemistries will be discussed. PolyPlus is developing rechargeable and primary lithium-air batteries as well as primary lithium-water batteries. To date, 1300 Wh/kg for primary lithium-water cells and 1000 Wh/kg for Lithium air cells has been achieved. Recent developments include rechargeable Li-air cells and novel lithium-sulfur rechargeable concepts.
