Innovation at Dow: Innovating and Implementing Rigorous Engineering and Science-Based Scalable Solutions for the World's Greatest Challenges
Abstract
Today and looking into the future, the challenges facing the world are some of most significant and most daunting that humankind has ever encountered. If we aim to find solutions that truly improve the quality of life for all people on the planet, we must rely even more heavily on engineering and science to lead the way. Sustainability is now an essential component of innovation, and Dow has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to deliver solutions that are better performing and more sustainable. For people and the planet to benefit, new solutions must be developed at an unprecedented speed and implemented at world-scale to efficiently drive carbon dioxide emissions to zero. Demand for essentials such as energy, food, water, and shelter, as well as other once-deemed-luxury items is increasing quickly as a greater proportion of the world's population joins the middle class. To ultimately and positively affect all of us as consumers and deliver for customers, shareholders, and society more broadly, industry must both grow production volume and "decarbonize" processes simultaneously. Dow is well positioned to address this challenge, leading the industry with our plans to deliver zero-CO2-emissions materials whose carbon benefits propagate down the value chain. Further, using rigorous science and engineering that are always grounded in the laws of nature, the Dow team rapidly commercializes new products with improved performance and enhanced sustainability profiles for the diverse markets we serve, including plastics and packaging, construction, polyurethanes, industrial solutions, coatings, silicones, and home and personal care. The accelerated pace of innovation at Dow is made possible by our researchers leveraging our worldclass workflows that encompass molecular modeling and AI, high throughput synthesis, formulation, application screening, and digital tools for data modeling and visualization. These platforms are constantly evolving as the Dow team tackles ever-more-challenging technical problems, with solutions that span a range from bio-based feedstocks, electrification, and renewable energy sources as we move our product and process portfolio to zero emissions. We will share multiple examples of Dow's research capabilities and products, and will make the session interactive for the audience.
