On July 21, 2023, the division gathered in the Linus Pauling Lecture Hall for a symposium in honor of Professor Rudy Marcus, the John G. Kirkwood and Arthur A. Noyes Professor of Chemistry, on his 100th birthday.
Provost David Tirrell opened the symposium, followed by speeches from nine colleagues and former students of Marcus. They gave talks about his mentorship and his enduring academic career. Marcus concluded the event with a talk titled, "A Life in Theory – Connecting the Dots".
The symposium was followed by a dinner at the Athenaeum and featured congratulatory speeches from Division Chair Dennis Dougherty, Gudrun Giddings od the Honorary Consul of Sweden, Professor Harry Gray and three of Marcus's sons.
Marcus joined Caltech in 1978. In 1992, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contributions to the theory of electron transfer reactions in chemical systems.
