Chemistry Illuminating Biology: The Design and Synthesis of Chemical Probes for Biological Systems
Stuart J. Conway, Dr., Department of Chemistry, Chemistry Research Laboratory, University of Oxford,

The talk will focus on two key areas of our research.  The first area is the use of light gain spatial and temporal control over the release of biologically active molecules within cells, in particular our recent work on the wavelength-orthogonal photolysis of neurotransmitters.  The second area is our development of inhibitors of the epigenetic reader bromodomain protein modules.  These domains recognise lysine acetylation state, especially on histones, and hence modulate gene transcription.  We have reported some of the first bromodomain inhibitors and shown that they kill various cancer cell lines including MV4:11 acute myeloid leukaemia cells and some lung cancer cell lines.
