Open Faculty Positions
CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY invites applications in the following areas for tenure-track faculty positions in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Candidates with strong commitments to research and teaching excellence are encouraged to apply. We expect to make the appointment at the assistant professor level, but consideration will be given to exceptionally well-qualified applicants at the associate and full professor levels. Appointment will be contingent upon completion of all requirements for a Ph.D. in the specified fields below.
Chemical physics and related fields. Ph.D. in chemistry or in a related field required. Submit curriculum vita, publication list, a description of proposed research, and three letters of recommendation to Chair of the Chemical Physics Search Committee, M/C 127-72, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA 91125. Applications should be received by November 1, 2009.
Chemical engineering. Ph.D. in chemical engineering or in a related field required. Submit curriculum vita, publication list, a description of proposed research, and three letters of recommendation to Chair of the Chemical Engineering Search Committee, M/C 210-41, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA 91125. Applications should be received by November 1, 2009.
Organic chemistry. Submit by November 1, 2009 your curriculum vitae, a publication list, a concise description of proposed research, and three letters of recommendation to Chair, Organic Faculty Search Committee, MC 164-30, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California 91125.
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLARS
The Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology invites applications for Postdoctoral Scholar appointments in the various fields of interest to the Division. In chemistry, new postdoctoral scholars may be appointed in the fields of biochemistry, chemical physics, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, theoretical chemistry, electrochemistry, and structural chemistry. Research opportunities in chemical engineering include atmospheric chemistry, chemical reaction engineering, bioengineering, fluid mechanics and transport phenomena, catalysis, surface chemistry, and polymeric materials.
Postdoctoral appointments are by individual arrangement with the faculty member concerned.
Those seeking postdoctoral appointments should write directly to the faculty member whose research is of interest in order to determine whether positions and funding are currently available. Send a inquiry to: Professor ____, Mail Code ___, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California 91125
Postdoctoral Position in Synthesis and Physical Organic Chemistry. January 1 to May 30, start date. Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field with experience and demonstrated synthetic skills as well as an interest in physical organic chemistry. Successful applicant should also have substantial hands-on experience with the use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, some computer knowledge and good laboratory technique. Because the position will involve substantial research interactions with undergraduates, it will be essential to have a strong command of colloquial English. Duties, under professorial direction, include experimental and theoretical research on conformational analysis of small molecules and possible applications to it of NMR in liquid-crystal solvents. For a description of recent research in this area, see http://chemistry.caltech.edu/faculty/roberts/index.html, and John D. Roberts, Fascination with the Conformational Analysis of Succinic Acid, as
Evaluated by NMR Spectroscopy, and Why, Accts. Chem. Res., 39, 889-896 (2006). The initial one-year appointment may be renewed for a second and possibly a third year. The annual starting salary is $37,500. A CV, list of publications, a brief statement of future professional goals and three e-mail addresses of persons who know the postdoctoral candidate and his/her work well should be sent promptly to Prof. John D. Roberts, Crellin Laboratory of Chemistry (164-30), California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA 91125 or robertsj@caltech.edu.
James Boswell Postdoctoral Fellowship. The California Institute of Technology and The Huntington Medical Research Institutes announce the availability of endowed postdoctoral fellowships for collaborative research. These one year fellowships, renewable for a second year, are open to individuals who have recently received their doctorate and are interested in doing research in the areas of biomedical magnetic resonance, neural modulation, cell biology, cancer genetics, tissue engineering, molecular neurology, hematology, or other areas closely related to the interests of faculty members at Caltech and HMRI. The Boswell fellowship provides an annual stipend between $44,000 and $50,000 commensurate with the fellow's qualifications and experience.
Applications should include a letter outlining specific research interests and a curriculum vitae. Three letters of reference should be submitted directly. All correspondence should be addressed to:
James Boswell Postdoctoral Fellowship Committee
California Institute of Technology
Mail Code 02-31
Pasadena, CA 91125
Completed applications with reference should arrive at
Caltech before December 1, 2009.
The California Institute of Technology is an Equal Opportunity / Affirmative Action Employer. Women, minorities, veterans, and disabled persons are encouraged to apply.
