Abstract: With rapid progress in solar-to-electricity conversion, large-scale energy storage will soon be a key bottleneck to continued growth in renewables deployment. I will update on recent work in the development of heterogeneous electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution and CO2 reduction reactions. I will discuss joint efforts between computational chemistry and experimental catalyst synthesis and characterization; and will also discuss the catalysts' incorporation into systems such as CO2 gas flow cells.
Biography. Ted Sargent is University Professor at the University of Toronto. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Nanotechnology. He is founder and CTO of InVisage Technologies Inc. of Menlo Park. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada; a Fellow of the AAAS "...for distinguished contributions to the development of solar cells and light sensors based on solution-processed semiconductors;" and a Fellow of the IEEE "... for contributions to colloidal quantum dot optoelectronic devices." He received the B.Sc.Eng. (Engineering Physics) from Queen's University in 1995 and the Ph.D. in ECE (Photonics) from Toronto in 1998.
